Lyophilized Film Sample DoD Problem: The protection of the Warfighter requires the development of advanced personal protective equipment (such as masks), novel air filtration and purification technologies, and associated enabling materials/research. Solution: Development of a new scalable protocol for the production of a co-continuous filtration membrane composed of regenerated silk fibroin. Outcomes/Benefits: (1) a new apparatus for the characterization of phase separation (2) a process for the formation of co-continuous membranes, and (3) a transition plan for technology transfer. Base year funding was followed up with additional funding to further the deliverables.
