Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Carbons for Warfare Toxin Protection

06/27/2017 12:06 AM
Activated carbon functionalized with iconic liquids DoD Problem: The protection of the Warfighter requires the development of advanced personal protective equipment (such as masks), novel air filtration and purification technologies, and associated enabling materials/research. Solution: By functionalizing activated carbon to be more active and selective to the capture of warfare toxins enhanced protection can be achieved. Outcomes/Benefits: (1) Molecular and species specific, dynamic multifunctional nanofibers and multi-stacked filtration media provide unprecedented protection in respiration, clothing, tents, and other wears (2) the materials work in both air and liquid, and 3) a multiplex platform for sensors that include spectral, temperature and piezotronic sensing. The project was funded and extended for an additional year. Contact Information: Richard Mu, Ph.D. Phone: 615-519-3370 E-mails: [email protected], [email protected]
